Nice Markdown is a Windows app that works with Markdown files on your own computer. This notice explains what the app stores on your device, what this website collects, and what happens when you contact us.

Last updated: 2026-10-07. Checked against Nice Markdown 1.0.3.

Who we are

Nice Markdown and this website are run by Poss Dev Studio Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 17495664. Our registered office is 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ. We are the controller for the personal data described in this notice. For any privacy question, use the contact form on the Support page.

The Windows app

Your files

Nice Markdown opens and saves ordinary Markdown files that you choose on your device. Saving is always your action; the app never saves a Markdown file automatically. Your documents stay where you keep them. The app has no account, cloud sync, built-in AI or collaboration service, and it does not upload your files anywhere.

No tracking in the app

The app contains no telemetry, analytics, crash reporting or automatic update checks, and no address to send them to. We checked its source code, its packaged dependencies and its configuration. The app runs inside Microsoft Edge WebView2, a component that Windows provides. We have not verified whether that component makes background requests of its own; Microsoft's privacy statement covers it.

What the app stores on your device

So that it can reopen where you left off, the app keeps a small amount of information in its own storage on your computer. None of it is sent anywhere.

The app settings folder is %APPDATA%\com.possdevstudio.nicemarkdown. The other items live in the app's WebView2 profile, which on the installations we have checked is at %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.possdevstudio.nicemarkdown\EBWebView.

Links, images and diagrams

A Markdown document can refer to images on the web, contain links, and include Mermaid diagrams. The app blocks automatic requests for remote images and other remote content when a document is opened, displayed, printed or exported, and our installed checks saw no such requests. Mermaid is bundled with the app and rendered locally. Diagram text that itself refers to external assets has not been tested for network requests, so we do not claim that every diagram is offline.

A link opens only when you hold Ctrl and click it, or click the address in its hover preview. Only web links (http and https) open, in your default browser, which then contacts the link's destination as any browser would. Other kinds of link are blocked with a notice and no script runs.

Saving and file conflicts

When saving an existing file, the app writes a temporary file beside it and may briefly create a replacement backup. It normally removes these files after a successful save. If cleanup fails or the app closes unexpectedly, a temporary or replacement file containing document text may remain on your device. These files are part of saving, not a managed backup or a way to recover unsaved drafts.

If another program changes a file you have open, the app shows the two versions side by side. If you choose to save your edits as a separate copy, the app creates a new Markdown file at the path you choose and leaves the original file untouched. If creating the copy fails, a partial new file may remain. The app does not upload either version.

Getting the app

If you get Nice Markdown from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles the download and any purchase under its own privacy statement. We receive only aggregate figures from the Store, not your name or contact details.

This website

Hosting

nicemarkdown.com is a set of static pages hosted by Netlify, Inc., a company based in the United States. Like any web host, Netlify processes request information such as your IP address, browser details and the pages requested, in order to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Netlify transfers data from the UK under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. The site has no accounts and sets no cookies of its own. Its typeface is served from this site, not from a third-party font service.

Analytics

We use Umami Cloud, run by Umami Software, Inc., to understand how this website is used. Its tracking code sends the address and title of each page you view, the site that referred you, your browser, operating system, device type and screen size, and your country and region to Umami. Umami states that it sets no cookies and does not store visitors' IP addresses. We see only aggregate statistics, and visitors are not tracked across other websites. Umami stores this data on its servers in the United States and keeps it for six months on our plan.

We rely on our legitimate interest in knowing whether the site is useful. Because Umami stores nothing on your device, the site shows no cookie banner.

When you contact us

The Support page has a contact form handled by Netlify Forms. When you send it, we receive your name if you give one, your email address, the app version if you give it, and your message. Netlify stores each submission in our Netlify account, in the United States, and emails it to our support mailbox. The form includes a hidden field that helps filter automated spam; it holds no data from genuine visitors.

We use what you send to answer your request and, if you report a problem, to fix it. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in supporting people who use Nice Markdown. We delete form submissions from Netlify once we have dealt with them, and keep the email correspondence for up to twelve months after our last reply, unless we need it longer to deal with a dispute or a legal obligation.

Please do not send private document contents unless they are needed to explain the issue. If you reply to our email or write to the support mailbox directly, we receive your email address and whatever you include, and handle it in the same way.

Who else sees your data

We do not sell personal data, show advertising, or share your data for marketing. The companies that process data on our behalf are Netlify (hosting and the contact form), Umami Software (website analytics) and the provider of our email mailbox. Each acts under a contract with us and may only use the data to provide its service. We would disclose personal data to others only if the law required it.

Your choices in the app

File then Clear Recent removes the recent-file list. Closing every saved tab, for example with File then Close all tabs, empties the saved tab list. To remove everything the app has stored, close Nice Markdown and delete the settings folder and WebView2 profile folder named above. Windows does not offer this as an in-app command. Uninstalling the app may leave those folders in place.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict how we use it, object to our use of it, and ask for it in a portable form. In practice the only personal data we are likely to hold is your support correspondence. To make a request, use the contact form. We will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

When the app or the website changes in a way that affects this notice, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Earlier versions are kept in the website's source history.
